The Non-Resident High Commissioner of Republic of Fiji to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Mr. Jackson Bernard Nato Evans, officially presented his Letter of Credence to the Governor General, His Excellency Sir David Tiva Kapu, during a formal ceremony held at Government House yesterday (Wednesday 16th April).
In his welcome address, the Governor General paid tribute to the enduring and historic relationship between Solomon Islands and Republic of Fiji.
Sir David highlighted the longstanding bilateral, regional, and multilateral ties that have flourished between the two nations over the years.
“Our shared history, mutual interests, and the vast Pacific Ocean that connects us have forged a strong bond between our countries,” he said.
He recalled that Solomon Islanders have lived and worked in Fiji since the 1800s, particularly on plantations, while Fijian soldiers bravely fought alongside Allied forces on Solomon Islands soil during the Second World War—a testament to the enduring solidarity between the two peoples.
Sir David noted that both countries continue to collaborate in key areas such as security, education, and health services.
“Our two countries share common membership in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) and regional organisations such as the Pacific Islands Forum and its sub-agencies,” he added.
“These affiliations reflect our shared commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous future for our Melanesian region and our Blue Pacific Continent.”
In his response, High Commissioner Evans expressed his confidence in the continued growth of Fiji-Solomon Islands relations, grounded in mutual respect, cultural exchange, and historical ties through their shared MSG vuvale (family).
He emphasized the importance of people-to-people engagement and exchanges, stating that it is a vital aspect of the relationship that must be nurtured and expanded.
High Commissioner Evans is based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
