COVID-19: Gov’t progresses work on stimulus package

The Solomon Islands Government is currently working on a stiumlus package as a measure to deal with the effects of COVID -19.

 Speaking in Parliament on Monday 6th April the Prime Minister said:

“We are in the process of preparing and responding to the emergency phase of this pandemic, work has also been carried out with Financial Institutions, State-Owned Enterprises and private sector enterprises.”

He stated that this is aimed at cushioning the negative impact that the current measures and restrictions will have on the economy and public livelihood.

“Incentives to minimize or reduce costs for essential services and provide financial stimulus are progressively being implemented,” he said.

According to the Prime Minister, Officials in the Ministry of Finance and Treasury and the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet are now consolidating information after a wide range of consultation with stakeholders including Development Partners, to develop a comprehensive COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Package. 

He stated the proposal will then be presented to cabinet.

The government will continue to keep the public informed on the roll out of these measures.
