Former Premier of Malaita Province, Daniel Suidani, has passed away this morning at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.

Suidani’s death was confirmed by his former advisor and close friend, Celsus Talifilu, who announced the news earlier today.

“It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Honourable Daniel Suidani, Member of the Malaita Provincial Assembly for Ward 5, West Baegu/Fataleka, who passed away this morning at the NRH,” Talifilu said.

Suidani was a prominent and outspoken political figure who led Malaita Province — the country’s most populous — during a pivotal period in Solomon Islands’ political history.

He rose to national prominence in 2019 when he opposed the government’s decision to switch diplomatic ties from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China, a move that sparked political division across the nation.

As premier from 2019 until his removal through a vote of no confidence in February 2023, Suidani was known for his unwavering stance on the China-Taiwan issue and his vocal advocacy for Malaita’s autonomy in development decisions.

Suidani was also the founder of the Umi For Change Party, which emerged as a political platform reflecting his reformist and pro-transparency ideals.

His tenure was marked by both political tension with the central government and grassroots support, particularly from Malaitans.
