The National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara is considering introducing daily storage fees for bodies left uncollected in its morgue beyond 48 hours, as the facility struggles with severe overcrowding.

In a statement issued tonight, NRH management said the morgue is now holding 18 bodies—well above its optimal capacity. Authorities described the situation as “morgue congestion,” raising concerns about hygiene and the dignity of the deceased.

Relatives of the deceased have been urged to make prompt arrangements for collection, ideally within two days of admission.

“The hospital is now considering activating a daily storage fee for bodies that remain uncollected beyond this time frame, in hopes of encouraging more timely retrievals and alleviating the strain on the morgue,” the statement said.

Hospital administrators acknowledged the challenges many families face, including financial constraints, travel difficulties, and delays caused by legal or forensic requirements. They stressed that NRH is willing to work with families to address such issues.

NRH also highlighted the lack of a funeral home in Honiara, noting the hospital morgue remains the only facility for storing bodies pending burial, repatriation, or post-mortem examinations.

The situation, management said, underscores the urgent need for investment in additional mortuary and funeral services in the capital. They called on authorities and potential partners to consider long-term solutions, such as expanding the morgue or establishing a dedicated funeral home.

Meanwhile, NRH says it will maintain close communication with affected families and provide updates on new policies as they are finalized, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring dignity and respect for the deceased while balancing the hospital’s operational pressures.
