Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Tozen Leokana has expressed concern on the poor performance of students in mathematics and science at form three level national examination.

Speaking at the Principals’ Conference now underway in Honiara, he said principals are grappling with the challenge of maintaining the high quality of education “we aspire to achieve”.

He added: “National examination results, particularly in mathematics and science at the Year 9 education level, indicate dismal performance by our students. As such, the Ministry is concerned and will soon undertake a thorough investigation to determine the underlying reasons for students not performing at the expected standard,” he said.

He also told the principals that they are navigating the growing demands of a digital age in a country facing a stark ‘digital divide’.

Leokana said the difference in access to ICT between urban and rural schools is wide and deeply concerning.

Many schools in the rural settings are still without internet connectivity or the technological tools required to prepare students for a future that is increasingly driven by information and technology, said the minister.

He added the absence of digital infrastructure not only limits student learning but also constrains your ability as leaders to access timely information, professional resources, and opportunities for virtual collaboration and development.
