Minister of Infrastructure Development, whose also responsible for marine, Rick Fuo’o has commended seafarers describing them as the the lifeblood of “our domestic and global supply chains”.

Fuo’o was the guest of honour during this year’s Day of the Seafarer celebrations organized by the Solomon Islands National University’s Maritime College under the theme “My Harassment-Free Ship” today in Honiara

Fuo’o in acknowledging their work said the Solomon Islands is a maritime nation, in every sense of the world, “we have more oceans than land. Our culture, our trade, and our very own survival is tied to the sea.”

He added: “Our seafarers are our most valuable citizens.”

Fuo’o further honoured the seafarers stating: “You are ambassadors of our nation. And you deserve ships that are not only seaworthy, but also free from fear, disrespect, and harm.”

He assured the seafarers that as a government they plea to review and update the maritime labor laws to better reflect today’s modern realities.

“We honor you, and we support you. You are the lifeblood of our domestic and global supply chains. You are ambassadors of our nation,” the minister said in his statement.

SINU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Corporate) Dr. William Parairatosaid: “Today is a historic day for all our seafarers, in Solomon Islands and around the globe. The theme ‘My Harassment-Free Ship’ is a bold initiative that demands a shift in maritime culture, to create a workplace where every seafarer feels safe, valued and protected,” said Dr. Parairato.

He stressed that seafarers, despite being away from families for long periods, are the invisible force keeping global economies afloat, ensuring safe passage for passengers and vital goods.

Dr. Parairato reaffirmed SINU’s ongoing commitment to advancing maritime education through SIMC, noting key infrastructure projects including the successful launch of the SOLAS Centre in April and the upcoming lifeboat installation project valued between $5–6 million SBD.
