The current ratio of one police officer is to 463 persons is very low and the Commissioner of Police, Mostyn Mangau, hopes to recruit more officers to reduce the gap.
Talking to journalists this week, Mangau also spoke about the challenges his officers face—one of them is the shortage of manpower in terms of numbers.
He revealed that at the current rate, each officer is looking after 463 (1 to 463) persons. Mangau added this is very low when compared to the required numbers in a population size like the Solomon Islands.
Currently, there are just over 1500 police officers in the RSIPF.
Mangau said the ideal ratio for Solomon Islands is one police officer is to 250. This means that the current numbers must be doubled to hit such a ratio.
Furthermore, Mangau said the standard in most countries is one police officer is to 32 persons.
In the last operation for this week’s withdrawn motion of no confidence, 500 officers were deployed around Honiara to police the city.
Meanwhile, Mangau has praised the Honiara public for the good behavior they have shown during the MONC.
