Honiara, 4th March 2025: The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) is hosting a crucial training session in Honiara this week, focusing on the Ikasavea tool for data collection and field data analysis.

The training, running over the next few days, aims to bolster the technical skills of fisheries officers in improving fisheries management across the Solomon Islands.

Speaking prior to the start of the session, Valentine Hubert Telena, from the Inshore Management MFMR, welcomed the team from the Pacific Community (SPC) and facilitators, expressing gratitude for their expertise and continued support.

“Your guidance is invaluable to us as we strive to improve our fisheries practices,” Telena stated. “Fisheries play a vital role in our communities and economy, and accurate data is key to ensuring sustainable management.”

This workshop is part of MFMR’s ongoing efforts to build the capacity of fisheries officers and promote sustainable resource management. The Ikasavea program, launched in early 2023, has already yielded positive results, with enumerators collecting fish data at Honiara’s central market. The program is now expanding with technical training to support its continued success.

Telena emphasized the importance of data collection in managing the country’s fisheries: “Accurate and timely data ensures we can make informed decisions to protect marine ecosystems and resources, benefiting both our communities and future generations.”

The training will focus on the effective and efficient use of the Ikasavea tool for market and landing surveys. Officers from Honiara, Temotu, Makira, and Auki provinces are participating, with objectives to:

  • Understand the significance of monitoring fish catches.

  • Gain proficiency in using Ikasavea for market data collection.

  • Learn proper measurement techniques for fish and invertebrates.

  • Navigate and interact with the coastal fisheries database.

The workshop includes theoretical and practical sessions, with participants visiting the central market for hands-on data collection. Upon completion, participants will receive materials to help apply their newfound knowledge and skills to enhance long-term fisheries sustainability.

Meanwhile, MFMR has thanked SPC, sponsors, and organizers for making the training possible, encouraging all attendees to engage fully in the sessions.
