Honiara, Solomon Islands – The Honiara Summit 2025 will set a crucial foundation for global discussions on ocean sustainability ahead of the United Nations 3rd Ocean Conference, scheduled for June 9-13, 2025, in Nice, France.

Opening the summit in Honiara on Tuesday (25th February 2025), the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Ambassador Peter Thomson, commended the Solomon Islands Government for hosting the event and acknowledged the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) for co-hosting the discussions.

Ambassador Thomson highlighted the summit’s role in preparing global and regional leaders for the upcoming UN Ocean Conference, emphasizing the urgency of implementing Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14), which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.

“We are here to examine the world’s implementation of SDG 14, our universal target of ensuring the sustainability of the world’s fisheries,” he stated.

The Honiara Summit 2025 serves as a milestone event, bringing together government representatives, fisheries agencies, regional organizations, and international stakeholders. The discussions aim to strengthen collaboration and accelerate collective efforts to safeguard the Pacific’s fisheries resources, a lifeline for millions in the region.

A key outcome of the summit will be a unified regional position on ocean sustainability. “We will be producing a collective view through our declaration, through the recommendations that will come out of our dialogue, and we will take those to the UN Ocean Conference,” Ambassador Thomson affirmed. “The platform is waiting there for the outcomes of this summit.”

As the Pacific remains at the forefront of global ocean governance, the Honiara Summit’s outcomes will play a pivotal role in shaping international policies and commitments at the UN 3rd Ocean Conference, ensuring the region’s priorities are heard on the global stage.
