LEADER of Opposition Hon Matthew Wale has urged national leaders to act upon the findings of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Speaking in Parliament this week, Hon Wale said the TRC has done its work of bringing to light the truths about the underlying causes of the conflict and have provided a road map towards reconciliation and national unity.

He said the responsibility to ensure that Solomon Islands is on the path towards reconciliation and national unity rests on the shoulders of national leaders of this country.

“The path towards reconciliation and unity requires a profound and comprehensive understanding of the root causes of our past conflicts,” he said.

Hon Wale highlighted some of the underlying causes as our colonial heritage, lack of national unity, land issues, uneven development, mismanagement by successive governments, economic crisis, and weakening traditional authority structures and law enforcement mechanisms, the misuse of state power and resources, and the roles played by certain figures – have all been identified through the painstaking work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

However, the Opposition Leader said the acknowledgement of these causes is only the first step.

He said to genuinely move forward, national leaders need to act on the insights of this Report – effectively addressing and resolving the root issues through the necessary legislative reforms.

“But it boils down to the political will of national leaders, leaders who are determined to face the past, and to ensure that it is not repeated,” he said.

Hon Wale has reminded Parliament that the goal is not just to mend what has been broken, but to build a society that is stronger, more united, and more resilient than before – a more equitable and just society.
