Leader of Opposition Hon. Matthew Wale has applauded the recent change done by Government to pay rent entitlements directly to public servants. According to Hon. Wale, this welcomed change is a step towards creating a more responsible and robust public service.
However, Government is strongly urged to set realistic amounts that reflect the high cost of rent that public servants face.
As a national concern, Hon. Wale stressed that these amounts should be ones that enable public officers to avoid poor living conditions, making sure our officers are in good living conditions.
Wale argued that it is crucial to ensuring the country does not suffer from low productivity and a demoralised public service.
“Public servants are the main drivers and implementors of Government policies. As such, Government has a commitment to making sure that public servants can fully afford good living conditions. To put it simply, Government must ensure that the hard-working people who serve this country have good roofs over their heads,” said Hon. Wale.
