Proposed amendments to the Political Parties Integrity Act, 2014

Political Party Office is progressing with the proposed amendments to the Political Parties Integrity Act, 2014, to strengthen the political parties system in the country.

This is according to Political Parties Registrar, Mr Jasper Anisi while speaking this week during the ongoing interactions and policy discussions of the Policy, Implementation, Monitoring, Evaluation Unit, PIMEU, within the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, OPMC, with key stakeholders, Private Sector and other Government Ministries.

Mr Anisi said that the proposed amendments to the Political Parties Integrity Act, 2014, is aimed to address the issues that were experienced from the 2014 and 2019 National General Elections.

In his presentation, Anisi highlighted the Political Parties Integrity Act of 2014, The Political Parties Commission-powers and duties, Lessons from 2014 and 2019 General elections and the way forward.

He said the amendment of the Political Parties Integrity Act 2014 will help to improve and promote political parties system, increase citizen participation in political parties, and introducing a Political Finance Regulation as a future project.

Anisi added the amendment is currently in its drafting instruction and will be passed on to Caucus and on to Cabinet once the drafting is done.

Meanwhile, National Consultant to the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mr Bernard Bata’anisia said the Political Parties Commission needs support from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, OPMC.

Bataanisia said OPMC, through PIMEU will work closely with the Political Party Office on the way forward to promote the political parties system and increase citizen participation in political parties.

The presentation and discussion session is part PIMEU’s outreach and engagement with Private Sector and other Key Stakeholders on Government policy redirection.
