Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare says that the fight against corruption is the highest priority of his ruling government.

PM Sogavare was speaking during the 2019 International anti-corruption day marked in Honiara, Monday 9 December.

“…The fight against corruption is the highest priority of the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA). This is the will of the people. As your Prime Minister and with the support of my Cabinet, we are committed to combat and rid out country of this malignant cancer,” PM Sogavare said.

He said corruption is a scourge to our livelihood, our wellbeing, our economy and our very existence as a country.

“The fight against corruption should unite us all. To do nothing about corruption is not an option for my government.

“A ‘business as usual approach’ in our fight against corruptions is not acceptable,” he said.

He added that the detrimental effects of corruption have been seen and felt by every single person throughout Solomon Islands.

“Corruption defies and undermines our fundamental human rights.  It exacerbates poverty.  It deepens inequality by diverting money needed for basic health care, education and other essential services in our societies to other dubious things.

“Corruption undermines business confidence. It prohibits new and genuine investors from investing in our country. It increases the costs of doing business.  It distorts markets.  It impedes economic growth – and will prevent us achieving the objectives of our national development Strategy and the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Corruption undermines development. It sustains poverty. It drives political instability. It drives the unsustainable use of natural resources. It undermines the delivery of services and weakens good governance and the rule of law,” he stated.

He said corruption is driven by a myriad of factors but ultimately it is driven by greed and criminal activity.
