The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has removed 101 unexploded ordnance (UXOs) at Gilbert Camp, East Honiara in a-two-day operation which ended today.

Officer-in-charge (OIC) EOD Inspector Clifford Tunuki says EOD operators have unearthed 101 UXOs after they received a report from the community. The UXOs have been removed and are now safely stored at Hells Points for render safe.

EOD operators have identified the bombs as US 105mm High Explosive Projectile—which were the remains of the Second World War.

Inspector Tunuki says, “Since the UXOs pose great risk— I ask our good people, especially those in Honiara, and also in other provinces with high deposits of UXOs to report (any sighting) to police or to have their properties cleared by a UXO clearance company if they intend to develop it.”

Tunuki says, “If you sight any bomb(s) in your area, please do not touch or remove it.  I advise you to inform family members and other people to keep out of the area and let the police know about it so that our operators can remove it safely.”

“I really appreciate the Gilbert Camp community for informing police about the UXOs. This is the kind of working together we need do— to safely remove the World War II bombs from our communities.”

Following the operation, he said the area is now safe as the EOD team also did a 5 metres scan within the deposit area to make sure it is safe.
